Victoria Park Option (Calgary Next)
Ken King and the Flames Sports Group have decided to not pursue a new arena in Calgary at this point in time (as of 13 Sep 2017). The fact that Mayor Nenshi seems to have changed his position on this a few times recently means we don't have to worry about entering into a situation that was beginning to seem like a political tennis match.
If and when, the discussion surrounding the need for a new arena comes up when I'm on Council, I want it to be clear that I'm not opposed to a new arena, if the situation and deal is right for Calgary.
I'm open to listening to all sides of the discussion however, no public money should be used to fund a new arena, if there is no intention of it not being paid back to the taxpayers in a timely manner. If the intent is to have the City fund the arena without repayment; then I would be very hard pressed to support it considering the economic times and hardships individuals and small businesses are facing.
